System File Checker or SFC is a utility located in C: Windows\System32 folder in Windows 10, 8.1, and 7.  This allows users to scan and restore corruption in Windows system files. This sfc /scannow tool easily detects any corrupted files and the missing contents of the file. But sometimes due to the improper service running behind the Windows Module Installer. Or any other reason while running this tool you may receive one of the following errors. And the tool will not be able to run or complete its scanning and repair process successfully.

The main reason for the error is that Trusted Installer or the Windows Module Installer service is not enabled. Make sure Windows Module installer service is running

The main reason for the error is that Trusted Installer or the Windows Module Installer service is not enabled or not running. If this service is not running on your computer then you may face this problem. Let’s follow below the steps to start the Windows Module Installer service.

  • Press Windows + R key type services.msc and press OK.
  • This will open the services window.
  • Now scroll down and select Windows Modules Installer service.
  • Right-click on it and select properties.
  • Now under Windows Modules Installer properties change the startup type to automatic.
  • And if the service is not running click on start the service.
  • After making changes click apply and ok.

Note: if the service is already running just right-click and stop the service and again restart the service. close the services window and perform the System File Checker utility if you still face the error follow the next step.

Use commands to fix Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service error

After performing the above method if the problem is not fixed for you then don’t worry. We have one more tip to fix this issue using the command to do this follow the below steps.

First, open the command prompt as administrator.

If the user account control prompt asks to allow the program to run click on yes.

Now when the command prompt screen opens type the command below and hit the enter key to execute the command.

sc config trustedinstaller start=auto

you should get a Success message like “[SC] ChangeServiceConfig SUCCESS” as shown in below

Now Press the next Command shown below and press the enter key.

net start trustedinstaller

After executing the command you will get a message the windows modules installer service was started successfully.

Now that’s it exit the command prompt and run the System File Checker or SFC /scannow utility.
