Additionally, there are a lot of new features, such as Cortana, the Unified Settings app that runs across devices, the return of the Start menu, which combines the Windows 7 Start Menu with the Start screen in Windows 8.1, and many more features. Microsoft gives you 10 days to try out the new OS and roll back To the previous OS. When you upgrade to Windows 10 on a PC that already has Windows, the old version is stored in a folder called Windows.old.

While this takes up space (up to around 30GB), it also means that you can restore the version via Windows 10 itself.

How to Revert Back To Windows 7 or Windows 8.1

First, back up any information you currently have on your PC that you want to keep. Changing an operating system is a big thing, and data can often be lost along the way. You can use external hard drives, thumb drives, or some of the various online cloud storage such as OneDrive, Google Drive, and Dropbox that offer lots of space for free. When you’ve safely copied any documents, videos, photos, or other important data you need, you’re ready to begin.

  • First, open the Windows Start menu by clicking on the icon in the bottom left of the screen.
  • Select Settings from the menu.
  • Now you’ll see on the option for Update & Security, click it.
  • Now on the update and security window click on Recovery
  • The main pane will display a variety of choices. But you have to click on ‘Go back to Windows x’
  • where x will be 7 or 8.1 depending on what your computer was running.

Additional Note:

If you did a clean install of Windows 10 you won’t see the option to go back. You’ll have to use a recovery disc, or reinstall Windows 7 or 8.1 from scratch.

Also its very important If you’re using a laptop you’ll also need to connect it to a power source. Other wise the revert back option won’t work.

Here you will see a header called Go back to Windows X (dependent on what version you were on before). Click ‘Get started’ to begin.

You’ll now be presented with a screen asking you why you’re downgrading. Essentially, it’s a tool so Microsoft can gauge the user experience with Windows 10. Click Next when you’re done.

Before Windows starts the process it gives a couple more opportunities to cancel, along with a notice that you’ll have to reinstall some apps and programs. It also reminds you that if you had a password on your previous version of Windows then you’ll require it once the process is finished. If you’re happy to proceed then just click Next.

Downgrade Windows 10 by clean installation

When you upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 windows will keep your old Windows files As named windows.old to revert back to your old windows. This windows.old folder keeps lots of space (around 30 GB) so Windows automatically deletes the folder after 1 month To save your space.

If after 1 month you want to go back to your old Windows 8.1 or 7 There is no option to go back to your old windows As we show in this post. But there is still you can revert back to your old windows by performing a clean install of Windows 8.1 or 7 using a disk image or bootable disk.

Clean Install Windows 8.1 or 7

First, insert the Windows installation media into the DVD drive. Restart your computer and boot it from that drive. This usually requires either entering a keyboard command to open the boot menu or entering the BIOS (or UEFI on newer laptops and tablets) and manually selecting the drive. For discs, select your CD or DVD drive. For thumb drives, select “USB” or “USB-HDD.”

The first screen lets you select your language, location, and keyboard localizations. Click “Next,” then “Install Now.” Wait for the setup process to initiate.

Click “I accept the license terms,” then “Next” on the license screen. The next screen has two options, “Upgrade” and “Custom.”

Note: The Windows 8 installation system cannot upgrade from a newer version of Windows to an older one.

So for that Click on “Custom” to perform a clean installation. Now on the next screen, you’ll have to select the installation drive or partition.

Generally, it’s better to start fresh by formatting the install drive: do this by clicking “Format,” then “OK.” Wait for the primary drive to be formatted, then click “Next.”
Click the drive and then click “next” to preserve old Windows files in a folder in the new installation

On the next screen, the setup program will copy the Windows files from your installation media to your computer and begin installing the operating system itself. This may take quite some time, so if you’ve got something else to do for thirty minutes to an hour, it’s fine to leave your computer alone

When the process is finished. Your computer may restart on its own.
