Solved: Connection Failed error 651 in Windows 10

Getting Error 651 when trying to connect to the internet? Or some Times While connecting to the Broadband Connection it fails to connect with error 651 the modem has reported an error? Mostly You see this error when you try to connect or share your broadband connection with one or more devices. It shows a message that Your modem (or other connecting devices) has reported an error and Usually, the message will be connection failed error 651. This error code is most often seen whilst going through the Windows PPPoE wizard.

Error 651 is a common windows error which usually occurs when we try to establish an internet connection using PPPoE connections. The main causes for Windows Error Code 651 are related to issues with your networking hardware or a failure during the PPPoE setup process.This error occurs due to various reasons such as :

• Raspppoe.sys file have be saved in the wrong location.
• Registry errors.
• IP address conflict.

Creating New Dial-Up Connection

Sometime dial-up connection might get hanged and it will not work properly so, first create a new dial-up connection to do this.

open  Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center -> Change adapter settings(left side) -> Right click on existing dial-up connection and click Create Copy. Now delete your old dial-up connection and redial with the new connection. Or you can simply Create a new connection.

Run the Network Troubleshooter

The Network troubleshooter is windows automated tool which can find and automatically fix some common networking problems. So we recommend to first run this tool and let windows to find and fix the problem itself. If this fails to fix the problem then we perform troubleshooting steps to fix this error.

First type troubleshooting on start menu search and select it from top search results. On the troubleshooting, window click on view all form left the side. Now this will display all available windows troubleshooting tools. scroll down and click on Network adapter.

When the Network adapter troubleshooting tool opens click on advanced and checks apply repair automatically is selected. click on next and follow on-screen instructions. This will check the network and internet connection errors if found anything tries to fix this issue.

When the troubleshooting completes check the troubleshooting report and let’s know the details. You may also try the suggestions given by the troubleshooter and check if that helps. Let’s also run the Network Adapter Troubleshooter and check if that helps.

Reinstall Network Adapter 

This is the most working troubleshooting step when it comes to internet connection problem. You can simply reinstall the network adapter to fix Connection Failed Error 651 problem. Just follow the below guide to reinstall network adapter.

uninstall Network adapter driver

First press Win + R and type devmgmt.msc and press the enter key. This will open the Windows Device manager here you will see the list of installed device drivers. Find and network adapters expend it and select the installed driver for your network adapter. Right-click on it and select Uninstall. Restart your computer and your network adapter will get automatically reinstalled.

Otherwise, you can visit the Device manufacturer website, download the latest available drivers for this device and install it.

Clean booting may also help you fix error 651 in Windows 10

Press Windows + R keys. Type MSCONFIG on the run window and select OK. When the system configuration window opens on the General tab select the Selective Startup radio button and uncheck others options to clear selections. Go to Services > click on hide all Microsoft services and click Disable all button. Go to Startup tab >disable each item Restart your computer.

This Will Start windows on clean boot mode. Here again, undo the changes you have made on normal boot. To do this press win + R type msconfig hit the enter key to open the system configuration window. Now Uncheck the safe mode option and no general tab select normal startup radio button. on service and startup tab click on enable all hit ok to save changes, This will prompt to restart windows. After Restart Create a new fresh Dial-up connection and try to connect. This time your problem may get solved.

Disable Auto Tuning Feature

If you are using a router then this method can do the magic, Follow the below steps to disable the auto-tuning feature.

Right-click on Windows 10 start menu and select Command prompt ( admin ) When command prompt opens  Type below command and hit the enter key to execute the command. Or you can Copy the below command and paste it in command prompt

Netsh interface TCP set global autotuning=disabled

Now just try to restart/reconnect your internet connection.

Disable IPv6 of your Internet Connection

Also, this solution worked for many users. You can simply disable IPv6 to fix this error. Follow the below guide to disable IPv6.

Open Control Panel.and select Network & Internet.

Further, choose Network & Sharing Center.

Now click on your active network connection.

Select Properties and switch to Networking tab.

Untick/Uncheck Internet Protocol version 6 (TCP/IPv6) and click on Ok.

REPLACE RASPPPSE.SYS FROM WINDOWS 10 DRIVERS DIRECTORY

Sometimes, file regsvr32 rasppoe.sys is the main cause of error 651 in Windows 10. Check if regsvr32 rasppoe.sys is not having a problem.

To Check this Go to start >type cmd on the Search field and press Enter >when the Command window opens, type regsvr32 rasppoe.sys and click OK. If regsvr32 rasppoe.sys failed to load, there must be a problem on it. Download a new copy of regsvr32 rasppoe.sys online.

NOTE: Unzip the downloaded file first before replacing the old file. Follow the steps below:

Go to My Computer > on the Windows Explorer, locate your Drive C. Open on the Windows folder > double-click System 32 Folder. Here Open Drivers folder > find rasppoe.sys file and rename it
so that you don’t have to delete it. Perhaps, you may rename it as old-rasppoe.sys > copy and paste the new rasppoe.sys file on the folder.
